BLT Buffet #3: Best Films of 2013

Hello and welcome to BLT Buffet: Best Films of 2013. I'm Linus Schill, and this is my review of the latest and greatest news from the world of entertainment.

As you probably know by now the Oscars are soon upon us. In fact, there is a new countdown clock in the sidebar of this post, depending on when you read this. Recently The Academy has released their list of nominations eligible to take home the award. If you would like to see the complete list you can do so by clicking here.
Now, to be perfectly honest I have not scene all of the movies nominated, or the actors in them, and I will not pretend to. So instead, I will briefly talk about the only category where I have seen all the movies, best visual effects. Personally I think that there is a huge problem in these nominations. First, I do not think that The Lone Ranger should be nominated because the visual effects were not outstanding. Ok, they were good, but were the really better then the effects in Man of Steel, no. And they most CERTAINLY were not better than the effects in Pacific Rim. Now I think everyone knows this year Gravity will take home a lot of Oscars. Namely cinematography, visual effects, and sound design, but it would have been nice to at least see Pacific Rim receive a nomination. Anyway, onto something else new that is coming to BLT Films Reviews. It won’t appear nearly as often as the normal BLT Buffets, intact only once a year. I present, the 2014 BLT Sandwich Awards!

Now this has been in the works for a while now, and the basis of this is to have our own little award show solely at BLT Films Reviews. It will only be movies I have seen, so keep that in mind. Now, without further ado, here are the 2014 BLT Sandwich Awards!!

BEST PICTURE:
-The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
- The Wolf of Wall Street
-Gravity

The Sandy goes to…

Wolf of Wall Street!
I loved both of the other films nominated but I feel like Wolf of Wall Street shined the most. I have not done a review of the film yet, but expect one soon. Next, something most big award shows don’t honor…

WORST PICTURE:
-The Hangover III
-jObs
-The Lone Ranger
And the Sandy goes to….

The Lone Ranger!
I wanted to like jObs so much when it first came out early last year. I am a big fan of Apple, so I couldn’t wait to see the history of it portrayed on film, but the movie was just awful. Same goes for The Hangover III. I loved the original, the second was terrible, and third not much better. For a comedy, there was little-to-no comedy even in the movie. But overall, how can we forget The Lone Ranger. This movie was one of the biggest disappointments for me last year. It looked really interesting, but it was just bad. Really bad. And don’t even get me started on casting a white guy to portray the only damn Native American lead character in mainstream media, ever. Anyway, moving on to…

BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING OR SUPPORTING ROLE:
-Leonardo DiCaprio: The Wolf of Wall Street
-Chadwick Boseman: 42
-Benedict Cumberbatch: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
-Harrison Ford: 42
And the Sandy goes to….

Leonardo DiCaprio: The Wolf of Wall Street!
I believe Leonardo DiCaprio is such a great actor, and this really is the movie to prove it. He shows the struggles, the triumphs, and well, even more struggles of this corrupt character. Now moving onto the next award, Best Actress. However, this year I did not see many movies that had actresses in leading, or even supporting roles for that matter. So there are only two nominations, and here they are…

BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING OR SUPPORTING ROLE:
-Sandra Bullock: Gravity
-Scarlett Johansson: Her

And the Sandy goes to…

Sandra Bullock: Gravity!
I know there are only two nominees but I feel that Sandra Bullock still deserves this whole-heartily. It is hard enough to carry a movie with just one actor, but having to create the fantasy that you are floating in outer space must have been a huge challenge and she did it splendidly. Now for the next award…
BEST MUSICAL SCORE:
-Thor: The Dark World
-The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
-Man of Steel
-Iron Man 3

And the Sandy goes to….

Man of Steel!
This movie has one of the most beautiful soundtracks I have ever heard. It makes you feel like a superhero every time you listen to it. If you haven’t seen the film, or have and don’t remember it, check it out on youtube or even buy it on iTunes, its worth the listen. Next award…

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
-Gravity
-Iron Man 3
-The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
-Pacific Rim

And the Sandy goes to….

Gravity!
Gravity is a spectacle to see, but you also feel the “gravity” of how extreme their situation is in the film. It is beautifully shot and that is why I feel it deserves this award. Next up…

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
-The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
-Man of Steel
-Gravity
-Pacific Rim

And the Sandy goes to…

Gravity!
This year had some spectacular achievements in visual effects. Man of Steel showed us what having a being like Superman show up on our planet and battle an equally unstoppable force. Pacific Rim showed us what would happen if building-size creatures fought building-size robots, and yes it is as epic as it sounds. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, showed us, well, Smaug, in all his glory and much much more. However, I think it is clear that Gravity is the clear winner just because of how you felt you were floating around in space with them, and it felt seamless.

And thus concludes The 2014 BLT Sandwich Awards! Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed.
